Choosing your wedding photographer shouldn’t come down to just who takes the prettiest photos. At a certain level, many photographers create beautiful work. What truly shapes your experience is how your photographer makes you feel throughout the day; their energy, communication style, ability to guide naturally, and how they help you stay present during the wedding.
After a while of searching through different photographers during your wedding vendor search, they can start to blend together. Even if the photos are gorgeous, you may not necessarily feel connected to one yet and that’s ok. I always recommend narrowing things down to 3–4 photographers whose style you genuinely love and then setting up a short call. It doesn’t need to be long. Even a 15–20 minute conversation can tell you a lot.
Of course, you can use the call to ask practical questions about pricing, packages, timelines, or travel, but the bigger thing you should be paying attention to is how the photographer communicates with you and how their presence makes you feel. Do you feel comfortable? Calm? Understood? Can you imagine spending most of your wedding day with this person nearby?

You will spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than almost any other vendor. They’re with you while you get ready, during private moments with your partner, family interactions, portraits, the ceremony, and many of the in-between moments. The more comfortable and safe you feel around your photographer, the more natural and relaxed you’ll look in your final images.
Once you feel good about the vibe and connection, the next step is asking to see full wedding galleries. Instagram is a great starting point, but it only shows the highlight reel, the five or ten strongest images from a wedding day. A full gallery tells a much more complete story.
You want to see how a photographer documents a wedding from beginning to end:
Some photographers share full galleries on their blog, which is a great place to start. Looking through a full wedding day also helps you picture yourself in the experience more realistically.
One thing couples don’t always realize until after the wedding is that a great photographer does much more than take photos. They help shape the energy of the day. A good photographer knows when to step in and guide, but they also know when to pull back and let moments happen naturally. They help keep timelines flowing smoothly, adjust when things inevitably shift, and create space for you to actually be present instead of feeling like you’re performing for the camera all day.

Especially for destination weddings and luxury wedding weekends, your photographer becomes part of the overall experience. You want someone whose approach aligns with how you want the day to feel whether that’s relaxed, intentional, editorial, emotional, celebratory, or a mix.
Years from now, you probably won’t remember every tiny detail of your timeline. But you will remember how your wedding day felt. You’ll remember whether you felt rushed or present, stressed or calm, connected or distracted. Choosing a wedding photographer who helps protect that experience is just as important as loving their work.
Beautiful photos matter, of course. But the best wedding photography comes from moments where you actually felt something while living them. That’s the difference between simply documenting a wedding and helping create an experience worth remembering.

If you’re planning a wedding in Hawaii and looking for a photographer who values both elevated imagery and creating an intentional, comfortable experience throughout the day, I’d love to connect. Whether you’re planning a celebration at Olowalu Plantation, Four Seasons Maui, Montage Kapalua Bay, or elsewhere in Hawaii, the goal is always the same: creating photographs that feel as genuine as the memories themselves.
