There is something special about a wedding with a small guest list.
With fewer people, there is more room to slow down. More time to actually be with the people who traveled to celebrate with you. More opportunity to notice the little things. And, perhaps most importantly, more freedom to make the wedding feel completely and unapologetically like you.
That was exactly what made Teresa and Justin’s wedding at Olowalu Plantation House on Maui so memorable.
With just 12 guests in attendance, their wedding was intimate, but there was absolutely nothing understated about it.
Every detail felt considered. Every part of the day felt personal. And their approach to fashion, design, and photography made this Maui destination wedding feel less like a traditional wedding and more like stepping into a beautifully curated piece of art.
An Intimate Maui Wedding With Intention Behind Every Detail
Teresa and Justin weren’t interested in creating a wedding simply because there was a checklist of things a wedding was supposed to have.
They wanted the day to feel like them. That showed up everywhere.
From Justin’s incredibly unique suit to Teresa’s beautiful veil, which was flown in from Spain, there was a level of thoughtfulness behind what they wore that immediately stood out.
Justin’s suit in particular was something I had never photographed before. It was distinctive, artistic, and completely his own. I loved that he clearly cared about finding a suit that he genuinely loved rather than simply choosing something that fit the expected definition of a groom’s suit.
And then there was the bolo tie Teresa made for him.
Inside the locket-like piece were family photographs—a tiny, personal detail that wouldn’t necessarily be noticed by every guest, but carried so much meaning for the two of them.
That is the kind of detail I love photographing.
Not just something that looks beautiful, but something that tells you something about the people who are getting married.
Color, Texture & a Little Bit of Maui
The design of the day continued that same feeling.
Opihi Love planned and designed the wedding, creating an environment that felt colorful, artistic, and incredibly intentional without becoming overly styled.
The floral design was one of my favorite parts.
Rather than relying on a predictable tropical wedding aesthetic, the flowers brought in layers of color and texture—deep pinks, oranges, purples, soft blues, and delicate blooms that felt almost like they had been gathered from an artist’s palette.
The reception tables continued that visual language with simple, sculptural arrangements and colorful candles, all set against the ocean and the natural beauty surrounding Olowalu Plantation House.
It was elevated, but it wasn’t fussy.
And that distinction is important.
The details didn’t compete with the setting. They complemented it.
A Wedding Day Centered Around Connection
For all of the beautiful details, the wedding was never really about the details.
Teresa and Justin made it very clear that their guests were important to them.
With only 12 people there, they had the opportunity to spend meaningful time with everyone who had made the trip to Maui. The day felt easy and relaxed, without the feeling of rushing from one traditional wedding event to the next.
There were quiet moments with family, including a particularly sweet moment between Teresa and her mom and a dance they shared.
Those are the moments that can be easy to overlook when a wedding day is moving quickly.
But with an intimate wedding, there is space for them.
And that is one of the things I love most about photographing smaller destination weddings. The day can breathe.
There is time to notice the way someone looks at their mom. The way a couple reaches for each other’s hand. The little interactions happening around the edges of the celebration.
Those moments become part of the story.
Giving Your Photographer Room to Create
One of my favorite things about photographing Teresa and Justin was how willing they were to let me be creative. They didn’t just want a collection of traditional wedding portraits. They wanted photographs with personality.
They trusted me to move them around the property, look for interesting light and locations, and create images that felt different from what they might expect from a traditional wedding gallery.
And they were completely game for it.
That kind of collaboration makes such a difference.
As a Maui wedding photographer, I’m always looking for the combination of light, location, movement, and connectionthat can turn a beautiful moment into something more unexpected.
On their wedding day, the weather couldn’t have been better. The sun was out, the conditions were incredible, and the light during portraits was exactly what I wanted.
Teresa and Justin were also incredibly natural in front of the camera, which gave us the freedom to make the portraits feel both editorial and genuine.
We could create something dramatic when the opportunity presented itself, but we could also step back and let them simply be together.
That balance is where some of my favorite wedding photographs happen.
The Beauty of a Small Destination Wedding
There is sometimes an assumption that an intimate wedding means a simpler wedding. I don’t think that’s necessarily true.
Teresa and Justin’s wedding was proof that a celebration can have just a handful of guests and still feel incredibly layered, personal, and luxurious.
In fact, having only 12 guests allowed them to put more intention into the experience.
Instead of spreading their attention across a huge guest list, they were able to truly spend the day with the people closest to them.
Instead of filling the day with things simply because they were expected, they could choose the things that mattered.
And instead of following a formula, they created something that felt entirely their own.
That is what I find so compelling about intimate luxury weddings in Maui. Luxury doesn’t have to mean bigger. Sometimes it means more intentional. More personal.
More beautiful because every decision was made for a reason.
Photographing Teresa & Justin’s Olowalu Plantation House Wedding
Olowalu Plantation House is an incredible setting for a Maui destination wedding, but what made this particular celebration stand out wasn’t simply the location.
It was the combination of the setting, the design, the fashion, and the people.
Teresa and Justin brought an incredible sense of personal style to their wedding without making it feel alternative or overly unconventional. Their choices were unique, but they still felt timeless.
The custom details, the flowers, the incredible suit, the veil from Spain, the handmade family keepsake on Justin’s bolo tie, all of it told a story.
And then, when the camera came out, they trusted me to tell that story in my own way.
That is always one of my favorite kinds of weddings to photograph.
I love when a couple gives me permission to see things differently. When they’re willing to wander somewhere unexpected for a portrait. When they trust me to chase beautiful light. When they don’t need every photograph to look exactly like something they’ve already seen on Pinterest.
Teresa and Justin gave me that freedom.
And the result is a wedding gallery that feels like them: artful, intimate, colorful, deeply personal, and completely their own.
