The Best Places for Couples Portraits on Maui’s West Side
Overview
Maui’s West Side is one of the island’s most popular destinations for couples. The Lahaina and Kapalua area is about an hour from Kahului Airport and offers a mix of luxury resorts, local shops, great dining, and plenty of adventure. While it’s a bit of a drive from Central Maui, the reward is well worth it—think golden sunsets, lush jungle, and pristine beaches.
To help you get a feel for what’s possible, here are a few of my favorite spots for couples portraits on Maui’s West Side.
Ironwoods Beach
Ironwoods Beach is a favorite for couples portraits, and for good reason. With its dramatic cliffs, crystal-blue water, and soft golden sand, it’s one of the most photogenic beaches on Maui. It’s also one of the few West Maui beaches where professional photography is permitted, which makes it a popular spot.
The beach is spacious, so even on busier days it never feels crowded. From the parking lot, there’s a stairway down to the sand, and a short walk takes us to the cliffs—one of my favorite spots for ocean-view portraits. The light at sunset here is unbeatable, creating the perfect mix of color and mood for romantic photos.
Honolua Forest
Just a short drive from Ironwoods, Honolua Forest offers a completely different look. The forest is filled with towering trees, lush greenery, and shafts of sunlight filtering through the canopy. It’s a peaceful, sacred place that feels worlds away from the beach.
When we photograph in Honolua Forest, we do so with deep respect for the land, keeping our time there mindful and minimal. I often pair this location with Ironwoods Beach for a two-hour session so couples can enjoy both the jungle and the coastline. The contrast between the two makes for an incredible gallery.
Shoreline Session
If you’re looking for something more playful, a shoreline session is a great way to capture your connection in the water. These sessions can be romantic and fun—perfect for engagement photos, “trash the dress” moments, or even a relaxed post-wedding shoot. Flowing dresses, wet hair, and the warm Maui light create beautiful, candid images that feel natural and full of life.
