There is something really special about photographing a couple who has been married for 25 years. A wedding day is the beginning of a marriage, but a vow renewal gives you the opportunity to celebrate everything that happened after that day, the family you built, the memories you’ve made, and the life you’ve created together.
I recently photographed a beautiful 25th anniversary vow renewal at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, and it was one of those celebrations that stayed with me long after the day was over. The couple brought their adult children and their spouses to Maui to celebrate with them, turning what could have been a simple vow renewal for two into a really meaningful family gathering.
It was intimate, beautifully styled, and definitely felt like a special occasion. At the same time, nothing about it felt overly formal or like they were trying to recreate their original wedding. It felt like a celebration of who they are now and the family they have created over the last 25 years.

The day began in their suite at Four Seasons Maui, where the couple got ready together. I loved being able to photograph this part of the day because it felt very different from the anticipation you usually see on a wedding morning. After 25 years of marriage, there was such an ease between them. They were comfortable together, they were excited about the celebration, and there was a sense that they were simply enjoying being in the moment.
She wore a gorgeous floral lace gown with a soft, romantic feel, while he wore a light blue jacket with cream trousers. Their family followed a similar color palette, with soft pinks, blush, blue, and neutral tones. The flowers throughout the celebration were a mix of pink and white, which looked beautiful against the tropical gardens at the resort.
The whole day had that elevated Maui feel that I love so much. Everything was thoughtfully planned, but it still felt warm and personal. There was professional hair and makeup, beautiful florals, a live string band for the ceremony, an intimate dinner, and plenty of time set aside for photographs with their family and just the two of them.

Their ceremony took place in the Plumeria Garden at Four Seasons Resort Maui, surrounded by their children. The tropical gardens and ocean views created such a beautiful backdrop, but what really made the ceremony special was having their family there to witness it.
There is something different about photographing a vow renewal when the couple’s children are grown. The people standing around them are a visual reminder of everything that has happened since their original wedding day. Their marriage isn’t just represented by the two of them anymore. It is represented by their family, their relationships, and all of the years they’ve shared together.
A live string band played during the ceremony, which added another beautiful layer to the experience. Afterward, we took time for family portraits in the gardens before giving the couple some time together.

One of the things I love about vow renewals is that there really isn’t a formula for what they need to look like.
For some couples, it might be a private ceremony with just the two of them. For others, it might be a larger celebration with their children, grandchildren, and closest friends. Some couples want to dress up and have a beautiful dinner afterward, while others may spend the day exploring the island and end with photographs on the beach at sunset.
I especially love the couples who choose to make their vow renewal into an entire experience in Maui. Staying at a beautiful resort, getting ready together in your suite, having flowers designed specifically for the occasion, bringing your family along, enjoying a private dinner, and taking time for sunset portraits can turn an anniversary into something that feels like a real destination celebration.
You don’t have to recreate your wedding day. In fact, I think there is something much more meaningful about creating a celebration that represents who you are today.

The family portraits from this day are some of my favorites because they tell such a bigger story.
When you look at a photograph of a couple on their wedding day, you’re looking at the beginning of something. When you photograph that same couple 25 years later with their grown children, you’re looking at the life that came from it.
That was one of my favorite parts of this celebration. I loved seeing how their family interacted with each other and watching the way everyone naturally gravitated toward one another throughout the day. There was so much love and familiarity between them, and it was a beautiful reminder that a vow renewal can be about much more than celebrating a marriage. It can also be a celebration of the family that marriage helped create.
For couples traveling to Maui with their adult children, I think this is one of the things that makes a destination vow renewal so special. You get to bring everyone together somewhere beautiful and create photographs of your family at this particular stage of your life. Years from now, those photographs will mean something very different than they do today.

If you’re considering a Maui vow renewal, I think one of the best things about celebrating here is that you can make the experience as simple or as elaborate as you want.
For couples who want something more elevated, Maui’s luxury resorts make it possible to create an entire experience around the celebration. You might spend the morning getting ready together in your suite, have a floral-filled ceremony overlooking the ocean, celebrate with your family over dinner, and end the evening with photographs on the beach.
And it doesn’t have to be limited to the actual vow renewal. If you’re bringing family to Maui, you can turn it into a longer celebration with dinners, boat trips, beach days, pool time, and other activities throughout the week. The vow renewal becomes one part of a much bigger trip that everyone gets to experience together.
Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea is particularly beautiful for this type of celebration because you have the resort’s gardens, ocean views, beautiful accommodations, and everything you need to create an intimate celebration without having to travel from one location to another all day.
There are also many other beautiful places on Maui that can work for an elevated vow renewal, from other luxury resorts to private estates and smaller venues. The right setting really depends on what you envision for the day and who you want to have there with you.
If you’re planning an elevated vow renewal in Maui, I’d love to hear what you’re dreaming up and help you create photographs that tell the story of this part of your life together.
